An Evening of Passionate Speaking!

Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club finished for the summer break on a high. At our last meeting all three speakers spoke with passion on their chosen topics. David made his maiden speech on the subject of motorbikes and the praise he received from his evaluator was well deserved. Andrea talked about stress and how it should be managed to safeguard our long term health. Her knowledge on this subject shone through and we all learned something. Gloria followed the suggested theme for the evening and spoke about literature. She explained the importance of the great literary classics and the impact they can have on people’s lives. Andrea and Gloria have been with us for almost two years and are now both very confident in facing an audience and that’s what membership of Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club is all about – building confidence and learning how to construct a speech.

Now we take a summer break and our next meeting will be on Thursday September 24th 2015. New members and guests are always welcome.

Beer, Gadgets and Novels

The suggested theme of our June meeting was ‘Inventions and Discoveries’.

Richard Larkin told us about the history of beer and ended with some useful tips on beating a hangover. Gary Allmark talked about ‘The Allure of Gadgets’, especially all those amazing things advertised in the catalogues that drop out of the weekend newspapers. Sally Jenkins went off theme and gave us a step by step guide to writing a romantic novel set in the Gracechurch shopping centre.
All three speakers received useful feedback on their strengths and weaknesses.

In the second half of the meeting we had eight short impromptu speeches on topics set by David Gough. The subjects were challenging but, as always, it was amazing how members rose to the occasion when put on the spot! The subject of ‘Yellow Lines’ turned into a talk about driving tests and our speaker on ‘Nylon’ told us about its property of ‘wicking’.

We were delighted to have two guests present at the meeting and both joined in our impromptu speeches, giving creditable performances. We hope to see them again soon.

Our next meeting is July 23rd 2015 and visitors are welcome.

2015 AGM and New Committee

Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club 2015 AGM was held on May 28th at the usual venue, Aston Wood Golf Course. A majority of members were present to hear reports from last year’s officers, elect a committee for the 2015/16 season and discuss the strategy for the club over the coming year.

Officers stepping down from their committee roles were thanked for all their hard work on behalf of the club. These were Simon Cooper (Education), David Dugmore (Publicity)and Alyson Dugmore (Treasurer).

The new committee were welcomed:

Pam Collins (President)
Bob Green (Vice-President)
Claire Worsfold-Morris (Treasurer)
Gary Allmark (Education)
Shirley Guy (Secretary)
Molly Cooper (Social Secretary)
Sally Jenkins (Publicity)

After a social interlude in the bar we had lively discussion on what should be the club’s focus for the next twelve months. It was agreed that the emphasis should be put on what the club can offer younger members such as practice for a best man’s speech, work presentations and confidence building for interviews etc.

But new members and visitors of all ages and backgrounds will continue to be very welcome at Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club!

Sutton Speakers Club Annual Dinner Report

Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club held their annual dinner on Friday 17th April at Aston Wood Golf Club. Members and guests enjoyed a three course meal before the after dinner speeches.

Guest of honour was motivational speaker and trainer, Lorna Sheldon. Lorna persuaded us that, like her, we should not merely ‘think outside the box’; we should also ‘live outside the box’ and help others wherever possible. She recounted how, as a young mother with no business experience, she rescued an ailing BirminLorna Sheldongham engineering company following a family bereavement. More recently Lorna judged a speaking competition in a South African prison. The winner so impressed her that she offered to train him further after his release. This ex-prisoner is now making the most of his skills and his life because someone showed faith in him after a prison speaking contest.

A balloon debate followed Lorna’s speech. It was a closely fought contest but Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, was the winner, beating off the inventor of television, John Logie Baird and the political editor of the BBC, Nick Robinson. As Bill Gates’ representative, Claire Worlsford-Morris was awarded the Presidents’ Cup for her persuasive speech.

The Hwyl Stone was presented to Sally Jenkins as the most improved speaker over the past year.

The next meeting will be this Thursday, the 23rd April at Aston Wood Golf Club, Blake Street, Sutton Coldfield at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Guests are welcome

Shortlisted in a Novel Writing Competition!

Sally Jenkins

A bit of blowing my own trumpet today – I have been shortlisted in the SilverWood-Kobo-Berforts Open Day Writing Competition!

There are eight of us on the shortlist and there will now be a nail-biting time until the end of April when the winner is announced.

First prize is an ebook publishing package provided by SilverWood Books, with an additional print edition sponsored by Berforts Information Press. The publishing package will include a full copy-edit, proofreading, ebook and paperback cover design, formatting and conversion to epub, with a corresponding print edition. Plus, very importantly, publicity.

The shortlisting was done on the basis of a synopsis of the novel plus the first 5,000 words. I’ve now submitted the completed manuscript for final judging. I know there’s ‘many a slip twixt cup and lip’ so the chances of me actually winning are tiny but I’m going to enjoy just…
